CENTRAL's origins date back to the 1930's with a company by the name of Sayers Carriers, which started operating with a single vehicle carting 'General Freight' across Adelaide.
During the 1950's his son Don gradually took over the business, and by the late 1970's operated from his own depot located at Welland (an inner Adelaide suburb), with a fleet of around 25 vehicles.
In 1981 Sayers Carriers and Seagull Transport partly owned by the Huggett family, who had been developing a Warehousing and local Transport business, amalgamated to form SAFE Transport & Warehousing Services Pty. Ltd., thus becoming Adelaide's largest independent local parcel carrier, together with a growing warehousing business.
By 1986, Don Sayers had retired and the business became wholly owned by the Huggett family. During the next 10 years the warehousing, distribution and freight management business continued to grow rapidly. During this period the business was consolidated onto a 2.3 HA (6.5 acre) site at Kidman Park, SA.
At the end of October 1995, the business was restructured into two separate companies, in order to make each Company a specialised operation.
CENTRAL Warehousing & Distribution Pty. Ltd.
Specialising in Contract (3rd Party) Warehousing & Distribution within South Australia and throughout Australia via a network of independent suppliers.
CENTRAL Freight Management Services Pty. Ltd.
Co-ordinating the activities of a wide range of Transport services, including Cross Docking, Home Delivery and Break Bulk, concentrating on Clients with a need for a high degree of customer service and flexibility in the market place.
Also in 1995 the Safe Transport local courier, taxi truck division of the business was sold together with the SAFE name and has had no further connection with the Central Group Of Companies.
During 1996, at the Kidman Park site we added a new purpose built warehouse of approximately 2500 square metres, with a total capacity of over 3000 pallets, all in high rise pallet racking.
This building was designed to food grade quality standards and with our AQIS accreditation, this enabled us to service a new range of clients in the food service industry.
This now brought the Kidman Park sites' warehousing capacity to over 10,000 square metres or 8,500 pallet spaces.
The year 2002 saw rapid growth of our Freight Management business in Adelaide, due to the need for quality distribution outlets across Australia to fulfil the demand created with the growth of the National Break Bulk systems.
With a dedicated distribution fleet operating from our Kidman Park site, we are now able to offer flexibility and economy, together with a high level of customer service.
In 2004, Russell Wescombe, became a director after eleven years of sevice with the Central Group. At the same time he was appointed Chief Execuive Officer, making him responsible for the future growth and development of the Group.
Over the next five years as part of the overall Group's business plan, we intend to continue the development of our organisation with a strong emphasis on technology, customer service enhancements and client savings through productivity gains.
